Description
The DiMarzio Super Distortion is a classic high-output humbucker designed to push tube amps into natural overdrive. Introduced in the 1970s, it's one of the first aftermarket pickups made specifically to increase gain and output, and it's still widely used by players looking for thick, saturated rock and metal tones.
It uses a ceramic magnet and is wound to produce strong mids, tight lows, and plenty of output—ideal for driving amp front ends or keeping clarity under high gain. Despite its name, the Super Distortion still delivers decent note separation and dynamics, especially in the bridge position of guitars with mahogany or other darker-toned bodies.
It's a straightforward upgrade for players wanting to give their guitar more punch without needing amp or pedal changes.

️ Installation Notes
The Super Distortion fits most standard humbucker cavities. Choose F-spacing if your guitar has a tremolo bridge (e.g., Floyd Rose, Strat-style), or standard spacing for fixed bridges.
Because of its high output and ceramic magnet, it's often paired with a lower-output neck pickup or matched with a DiMarzio PAF Pro or Air Norton for tonal contrast.
4-conductor wiring gives you options for coil-splitting or series/parallel switching if your guitar has the electronics to support it.
Benefits
- Increased mids
- Powerful output
